Clive Stockil and Lin Barrie

Clive Stockil, conservationist,  and Lin Barrie, artist, share a passion for Community,  Conservation, Wilderness and Culture

On the contact zone between communities and wildlife, building bridges….

Born 3rd June 1951 in the south east lowveld area of Zimbabwe,  and qualified as a Zimbabwean Professional Guide in 1973, Clive’s passion for the African bush began in childhood, when he often sought out adventures in the wilderness with his Shangaan friends. He is universally renowned as an authority on the lowveld communities and their wildlife, and continues to build on his vast knowledge. Clive believes community led conservation is vital for the survival of African wildlife and has been at the forefront of this movement for four decades. His work with the Changana (Xangana)  people in and around Mahenye village culminated in the first CAMPFIRE programme (Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources), and its principles have since been replicated across Africa and the rest of the world. Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge was built as part of this programme in order to help the community benefit from wildlife tourism. He is the recipient of numerous national and international awards including The Order of Merit for Conservation by the French Government in 2011 and the inaugural Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa in 2013.

Born in Harare 1959, Biology and Literature were passions for Lin during her school years.  Plans to enter the world of science were superseded only by the decision to pursue the lonely path of an artistic career!

After completing a three year Fine Art Diploma in printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture and art history, at Durban Univerity of Technology in 1980, Lin worked as a textile designer in Zimbabwe, often traveling to Europe and the Far East.

In 1991, after returning to Zimbabwe from the Far East, and having explored Chinese brushstroke painting and Indonesian batik, she became a full time fine artist.

In 1997 Lin met Clive when she brought her African wild dog paintings for display to the Save Valley Conservancy in the lowveld… the rest is history…

You could say that wild dogs brought Lin and Clive together all those years ago…

Lin and Clive share the Zimbabwean lowveld wilderness..

In 2010, Lin did a Creative Writing course mentored by J.M. Coetzee, University of Cape Town.

In 2011, Lin did a monoprint residency/workshop with The Artist’ Press, White River, South Africa.

Lin has a wide-ranging art practice, collaborating with daughter Kelli Barker, (Make up and Body artist) in an ongoing art journey (‘Enough’); and with various other fellow creatives such dancers, musicians and craftspeople in the Mahenye village, wire/found objects artist Johnson Zuze, musician Hope Masike, and fashion artist Danayi Madondo of Haus of Stone, using Craft, Painting, Body Art, Make Up, Poetry/Music/Film, Photography, Fashion, the Spoken Word to create multi-layered art exhibitions and art performances.

Clive, Lin and their family often participate in  collaborations to raise awareness and  benefit communities, charities, cultural programmes, environmental conservation and biodiversity/sustainability programmes.

Lin Barrie spends much of her time painting and writing  in the south east wilderness of Zimbabwe with her life partner Clive Stockil,  respected conservationist and ardent spokesman for rural communities.

Harare, the Save Valley Conservancy and Mahenye Village (Kaya Nyala) are three home/art studio bases for Lin, Clive and their two children Glenn and Kelli, and Glenn’s daughters, Jade and Rayne.
