The Tusk Conservation Awards 2013

The Tusk Conservation Awards, developed by Tusk Trust in partnership with Investec Asset Management, aim to recognise and celebrate outstanding achievement in the field of African conservation.

http://www.tuskawards.com/

We are honoured that Clive Stockil, long time champion of wildlife and communities in the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier  Conservation Area of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique, including Gonarezhou National Park and the Save Valley Conservancy,  is a shortlisted nominee for these awards, along with Alasdair Harris (Madagascar), Edwin Kinyangui (Kenya), Tom Lalampaa (Kenya), Josia Razafindramanana (Madagascar) and Kerri Volter ,(South Africa).

On the 12th September we will attend a dinner in London to celebrate the progress of Community and Conservation efforts by unique individuals across Africa. Patron Prince William will attend.

This is so heartwarming for the future of endangered rhinos, African wild dogs, elephants, marine life, Vultures, Lemurs and all the myriad other natural wonders of Africa and the communities who safeguard this heritage.

A 60 minute documentary featuring an exclusive interview with The Duke of Cambridge and featuring the work of the Tusk award winners and nominees is due to be broadcast by CNN and ITV (UK) on Sunday 15th September.

“Golden Dog Days”

20130822-170457.jpg

“Golden Dog Days” – acrylic on canvas – 126 x 400 cm – by Lin Barrie, is a huge 4 meter long canvas, 126 cm deep, worked on by various people over a few years! Kelli Barker, (my make-up-artist daughter) and her friend Guy Cockroft, originally painted the metallic background on the canvas, for a backdrop to one of Kelli’s body paintings for the “While We Wait” photographic exhibition by French photographer Eric Gauss. I took that inspiration further, adding to the background and showing painted wolves at play…metallic gold and silver is used in the background…this is something I have just finished and will show the Riverside Studios in London,

and as a showstopper for Painted Wolf Wines on a bicycle ride around the UK to raise awareness of our African wild dogs…

Moonset and leopard calling at Chilo Gorge ….24th July

I sit on the deck at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, fresh brewed coffee in hand, and watch the sky brightening as the sun rises behind me over the Save River and the moon sinks in the west. It was full moon two nights ago, and a Hyena has been calling all night, colouring my dreams with melodious yodelling! We have a Spotted hyena den on the far bank of the river, within Gonarezhou National Park, and we regularly we hear the pups learning to yodel like their parents, very cute.

Just as the rays of sun begin to warm the cliffs on which the baboons roost, a leopard grunts, a series of rasping elemental coughs, to remind anyone who cares. To listen that this is untamed wilderness. A vervet monkey nesting in a tree below me responds with a nervous chatter, even though the spotted cat is across the water…

20130724-104154.jpg

Striped swallows begin their day, dipping and swirling in front of me in pursuit of their flying breakfasts.

I wander down to the aloe gardens , facing downstream, and marvel yet again at the glorious burst of colour from the massed Chabaudii aloes that Dad planted here only one season ago. The hum of busy bees increases as the suns rays intensify. White bellied and Scarlet chested sunbirds are intent on vying with the bees for sips of sweet aloe nectar, and bulbuls argue over the tastiest flowers to pluck and devour…all is bursting with life, a joyous way for me to start the day, in one of my favourite gardens…..

Mahenye dancers practice for the Harare Carnival

We drive into a family compound in the Mahenye village to watch two dance teams display their prowess, before they head off to the Harare Carnival…The painted huts are a delight….I am always struck by the beauty and intensity of the colour that the artists achieve with natural earth and ash pigments.

20130522-175007.jpg

The dancers are ready, impatient to begin. From the very old to the very young, this is a revered tradition and is a family affair, young lads and girls learning the intricate and symbolic moves from their elders.

20130522-175140.jpg

Body adornment adds to the power of the dancers….

20130522-175228.jpg

Clive leans against a fallen tree, waiting for the action and flanked by “tree children”…

20130522-175321.jpg

Culture is paramount in Changana village life, and a dance such as this draws keen interest from youngsters.

20130522-175355.jpg

A brightly wrapped woman carries a drum on her head, heading for the dance area…

20130522-175429.jpg

Dust and the setting sun combine to create a spectacular backdrop to the action.

20130522-175502.jpg

The full beaded skirts of the women create a swirl of brilliant colour,

20130522-175540.jpg

Porcupine quills and rattles are the trademark of the lead dancer, a venerable elder who lives for his dance…he has been dancing in this group for as long as I have known them, over 15 years, and he seemed ancient when I first watched him all those years ago! Even now, as he sits waiting the next round of dancing to begin, he seems beyond dancing, beyond the intense energy needed to sustain the physical stamina needed for the dance…but I know from experience that as the drums start, and as the women start their energizing song, his body will transform and bend and twist with all the energy of a visionary. Years of instinct and experience will shine through his every move….

20130522-175609.jpg

A sunset backed by a monumental baobab in the Mahenye Village, marks the end of the satisfying day……

Sketching on the deck at Chilo Gorge…….

. Sketching on the deck at Chilo Gorge…….
As I drift in my thoughts, sketching an African wild dog in preparation for a larger painting, I become aware of splashing in the Save river far below me. Hippos, I guess- it must be the resident pod of three mothers and youngsters…I will watch them later once my sketch is done. It is background noise, intent as I am on my work. I add a puppy to the sketch. This is the time of year that the Alpha females of the various lowveld packs that we know of, will be heavily pregnant and searching for suitable den sites.
The intensity of the splashing increases, pulling my eyes off my page, and I see two young bull elephants rolling in the olive-green water below me!
.

20130507-182745.jpg

They play and tussle for long minutes, submerging and keeling sideways, like toddlers in a play pool. Delight is mine, and I share this with nobody- all is still but for me and the elephants – that charmed hour between day and night.

20130507-183159.jpg

The bulls splash over the shallow sand bar to the bank, stand a while and begin to browse slowly along the vegetation in front of me. The joy of watching wild animals undisturbed, is mine.

20130507-183550.jpg

A monstrous crocodile draped on a sand bar does not impose, she is merely a silent and awesome presence. Part of the landscape. As is the gigantic and equally silent baobab behind her…

20130507-183907.jpg

Silence is broken only by the crunchy munching of the two elephants as they tear at green stuff, and then one elephant’s flatulence is let loose on a grand scale! Laughing, I wonder at how lucky I am to be in this place at this time…

A leopard begins its rasping grunt on the far bank. I peer intently through the decorative railing, entranced. I imagine the hidden spotted cat watching the elephants….and they seem to do the same, lifting heads high and cocking their ears, but relaxed in the knowledge that a mere cat is no match for them.

The baboons coming sneakily in to roost on the rocks think otherwise, and set up a hullabaloo, anxious to get to bed before the cat begins prowling. A golden glow to match the depth of the leopard’s rasp throws a warm mantle over the rocks. The name ”Chilo” means ‘baboon roost’.

20130507-184413.jpg

As dusk falls, the occasional squeal of a chastised baboon baby punctuates the air and the two elephants continue to browse along the edge, stretching far with extendable trunks to reach into the high branches of desirable trees. More impressive flatulence is loosed by the stretches of the two.

Then comes a fly – past, a band of raucous Hadeda ibis – oh- three only! They make noise enough for seven! They fade upriver to find their favourite night roost. Just a little taste of paradise, as I peer through the railings of the deck, suspended over the pristine wilderness that is Chilo Gorge on the edge of Gonarezhou National Park…

20130507-185104.jpg

And to top it all, I know that somewhere out there in the half-light, the African wild dog pack which resides in this area is hunting their supper! Hopefully, they will successfully den this year, as they did last year. A satisfying thought, which fills me with warm anticipation of months to come, spent in this special place on the edge of Gonarezhou. I will use this sketch of wild dog and pup to adorn the Jerabohm, the huge 3 litre bottle of Painted Wolf Wine that Jeremy Borg is donating for auction to our Taste of Africa event on 29th June at the Mukuvisi Woodlands in Harare. An awareness and fundraising event for the conservation of all African wild dogs in Zimbabwe!
