The diverse indigenous fish of the Save River

A short fishing expedition has Clive and his son Glenn climbing down the steep bank to catch five different species of fish in two hours.

A Bottlenose is the catch of the day…with it’s long snout for probing the floor of the save river and for nosing into cracks and crevices in search of food

20130429-122658.jpg

Then comes a Butter catfish and I can guess you know already by the name that this one is good eating!

20130429-123156.jpg

Out come two intriguing little swimmers – Churchill fish, with strange stumpy faces…..

20130429-123345.jpg

Then a Squeaker, a type of catfish with vicious spines dorsally and on the sides, spines fully erectable to wedge itself into crevices when danger threatens. An unwary fisherman who gets one of these spines impaled into finger or foot goes through deep pain…

20130429-123622.jpg

Last but not least, a gorgeous little predator, a fierce big-eyed hunter, known as Imberi……

20130429-123839.jpg

This little guy is of the fiercest denizens of the watery depths that are the Save River, with rapacious teeth for hunting down prey……..

Arthur Barrie 80th birthday 30th April 2011

Since Dad’s 80th birthday, time has flown so fast that it seems as if it was just yesterday that we gathered at 214 Brooke Drive, to give dad a huge surprise…

???????????????????????????????and to celebrate his special day with him.

Dad Cuts his Cake

Dad Cuts his Cake

the 80th cake

the 80th cake

Dad had a wonderful birthday celebration, attended by more than 30 people, including dear friend Rolf Chenaux-Repond who wrote and read this poem for him…

A MAN

 bearded

not too tall, not too short

 award-winning gardener

much-loved father to some, esteemed friend to others

proud owner of a pair of Svarowski binoculars

wearer of a hat once seen never forgotten

 cartographer by profession

 passionate nature lover

 camp cook of note

owner of a multitude of walking sticks

 unquestionably dependable

 friend of dogs

 unknown to utter a complaint

 inspiring at times

observant and enthusiastic naturalist by nature

 treasured campfire companion

 a man of brisk stride

 neat from any angle

……………. I thought I better leave this one out!

 modest, unpretentious and unassuming

 forty winks at noon

 star gazer

 fisherman renowned

 artist with pen and brush

 birder par excellence

 ……. and much more

ARTHUR BARRIE – 80 years young today

(thank you Rolf-for being such a good friend to Dad, such a sagacious judge of character!)

Arthur – ‘friend of dogs’ – with his old pal, Barney.

Now, my admission of guilt is that I undertook to write a newsletter for Dad, way back in 2011, to all of you family and friends who could and could not be with us on that day….and here we are in 2013, and it is his birthday again soon, on the 30th April 2013!

Well, I shall make up for the lack of communication by writing a long update on Dad and the Barrie family, babies, favourite dogs and fishing…forgive me if I tell some of you what you already know, so that long lost friends can be updated!

Firstly I will write exactly what Dad drafted for me to write immediately after his 80th birthday celebration, in response to the good wishes of you colleagues from his days at the Geological Survey. He steadfastly refused to sit and punch away at the laptop, so gave me a handwritten note of what he wanted to say to you all!

from Arthur:

To old and present colleagues from the Geological Survey:

Thank you all for the birthday wishes and kind compliments concerning my cartographic skills. After my decision to stay on at the Survey and retire in 1991, I have had no regrets, and great job satisfaction, but do remember with great fondness time spent in Australia and Germany with some of you and your families.

I remember so many maps, some cartographic ‘piece de resistances” in the days of free hand cartography and am thrilled that so many of you still have those maps hanging on your walls.

Now in my twilight years, I am still able to enjoy my favourite pastimes-gardening, birdwatching, and bush trips to wild places with my children and friends.

It has been exciting and heartwarming receiving so many 80th birthday wishes from you all. I had a memorable 80th birthday celebrating with family and friends, even those friends who could not be there in person, but were there in spirit although spread far and wide. Thank you and best wishes.

Arthur Barrie

The Geological Survey was such a huge part of Dad’s life, and his life long commitment to making good maps is reflected in the well wishes of all of you who worked with him. Thank you for communicating with him from all over the world. He was very touched when Tim Broderick collected and read all your emails at the party! Thank you Tim!

Dad is just as fit as ever and acts like a man 20 years his junior, but does complain of a sore back when he has been climbing rocks, planting trees, and building campfires! For his 80th birthday he promised himself that he would buy his first pair of denim jeans, and, assisted by Kelli, he chose a pair. Has not stopped wearing them since!

I  live most of the time with my partner, Clive Stockil in the bush at Senuko ranch, part of the Save Valley Conservancy – a ‘big five ‘ area in the lowveld of Zimbabwe. Dad visits us often at our home, Tsavene, where he walks, sketches and watches birds to his heart’s content.

Two of Dad’s favourite dogs, Jack Russells,  our Mhisi and Kelli’s Nchila, are sadly missed by us all after their passing away. Good companions and friends they were.

A few years ago our “Lion Hut “ in the bush fell down…..a sad day, as we and our various guests had all had great times in it. And some dramatically frightening times when lions came through, as some of our visitors can attest to!

Lorraine, in a letter to Bianca living in Australia, says of one Binga trip:

Visit to Binga 2009

The second day Lin, Clive and Gramps were here we went to a place called elephant bay by boat and caught some really nice bream for lunch, next day we went out and then a huge storm blew up, we had to make a dash for shore and ended up in a lot of reeds, quite scary cause this lake can get very rough but an experience especially for Gramps. He has little experience of boats but is very into it and they have gone out again today as I write this.

In 2012 Dad bravely accepted the job of re-constructing and planting Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge gardens. A huge job, with much earh and rock hauling, but very rewarding for all of us as the gardens began to take shape, and the team of gardeners learnt how Dad liked things to be done! He amazed everybody by his energy and stamina, always the first on the job and the last to leave.

Our sweet blessings have been made up of such moments as attending the two stimulating and successful exhibitions that Kelli, a professional Make Up Artist, created at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, in conjunction with Eric Gauss, a talented photographer. Her professional Make Up skills speak out very strongly in the evocative photographic images she and Eric have created. Kelli has had a busy time in Harare, completing various other beauty and make up jobs.

We all gain great love by being part of this family. Such sweet moments we remember, such as holding the newest Stockil baby,“Rayne”, sister for Jade, just hours after her safe birth. Watching Jade and Rayne growing up, beginning on their exciting and often traumatic journey into life, has been a joy.

Jade and Rayne

Many bumps and scrapes, stings and bites have come their way as they bravely tackle every new experience in this wilderness world. Five year old Jade is at once indomitably cheerful, and in the next breath deeply angry, in the face of adversity. Her little “Sisi” Rayne  has a naughty smile on her face, a deep sense of humour. Deceptively angel-faced, she has a strong chin and a knowing look about her that suggests an unshakable strength of character …

Jade is a dynamic, sensitive and volatile little soul, intensely protective of her little sister and anyone she perceives to be the ‘underdog’, beginning to understand Shona and Changana languages and English, hugely inquiring and appreciative of all the wild life, books and art around her. Both of them play creatively for hours, digging in the ‘dress up trunk’ dedicated to them at our house, creating elaborate stage sets, beating on drums and dancing. Jade is also turning into quite an artist!

Kelli’s wonderful Christmas present to the whole family was a voucher for us to have a family photo shoot with a professional photographer friend of hers. Michelle hauled her cameras and we gathered in the garden of 214 , all dressed in white shirts, for our photographic debut with Ethan……..

this space is reserved for the photos!

Can not wait to see the photos, although sadly Clive could not be there due to work pressures. Glenn and family have been tied to Senuko, due to rhino poaching pressures, so their presence was also lacking.

Dad has two dear sisters, Marge and Liz, whom he has not seen for so long, so I include photos of them in this newsletter, they are such a warm and integral part of his life and memories…….

So many other precious family on Clive’s side, the Stockils, and Mum’s side, the Cox’s, and many dearest friends, have not been mentioned in this letter…..

Please forgive me! I decided to limit the space to dad’s immediate family, since time and space prevented me from continuing and writing a book on ALL of you -but rest assured that although your name may not be specifically mentioned, in my rush to get this done before another few years go whizzing past, that every one of you is such an integral and loved part of our circle of life.  THANK YOU all for being out there.

Fresh-brewed coffee to start the day at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge…. 19 th April

I wake to an overcast sky, but a hole in the cloud canopy suddenly brings sunlight to the rock cliffs opposite Room 1, ‘Eagle’, at Chilo Gorge.. ‘Chilo’ in the local language means ‘ baboon roost’ – a very apt name for this glorious place, where high cliffs of tumbled rock and huge riverine trees precariously perched on steep banks over the waters of the Save river form dramatic bedtime havens for the troops of baboons that live here.

20130422-212505.jpg

We hear a haunting wail, the ‘man falling down a well’ cry of a baby Pels fishing owl somewhere in the deep green canopy of the trees that overhang the river on the opposite bank. He is hungry, shouting for mum…..
Sharing some quiet time and early morning coffee with Clive is luxury……coffee freshly brewed and accompanied by a crisp biscuit (cookie if you reading this on American soil!). Plus my favorite read at the moment, ‘The Calcutta Cookbook’, full of fascinating traditional Indian recipes.

20130422-212732.jpg

Seven fat Green pigeons fly past silently, on their hurried way to some chosen tree, a fruiting fig or a Cordyla with still- green but tasty fruits just forming. Their rose- pink legs are lit by patchy sunlight against the dove-grey clouds.
I savour my surroundings: this room that I sit in is a delight of textures and clever colour.
Ngoni cattle skin rugs sit on sisal carpets woven locally in Zimbabwe. These Ngoni-type cattle derive from ancient Zulu stock and are hardy, beautiful animals, spotted and splashed with black, white and rust. They thrive on the banks of the Save, carefully herded by their proud owners, and I never tire of their glorious colours.

20130422-213039.jpg

The local Changana people weave Lala palm fronds and use the strong plait to tie a complex layers of river reeds into durable and beautiful panels. These were traditionally used as doors to their huts and we have used them as decor and panelling in the lodge.

20130422-213243.jpg

Chosen and orchestrated by designer Belinda Jones, and ably installed by her brother Anton, the decor here never fails to delight me and complements the structure of the rooms perfectly

20130422-213535.jpg

A room to meditate and dream in……

Chilojo Cliffs and fashion photoshoots……

18th April
Kelli has been working with Priscilla Chigariro of Domino Magazine as beauty editor and make up artist. An inspired thought led her to suggest a photoshoot in front of Chilojo Cliffs for the June ‘conservation month’ issue and Priscilla embraced the idea. Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority agreed and all roads led to Chilojo Cliffs yesterday! A long hard day was had by all with a 3 am wake up on the banks of the Runde river, coffee from the kitchen of the well-appointed Chipinda Pools tented camp and gorgeous model named “T ” made up by Kelli by 4 am. Then into the minibus and our own trusty Toyota truck, both packed to the roofs, (and above!), with multiple bags of clothes, clothes rail, accessories, tent poles borrowed hastily from Hugo van der Westhuizen of Frankfurt Zoological Society, camera tripods, chairs and props, food for the road, and last but not least, the creative crew: director Priscilla, fashion editor Kate, make up artist Kelli, photographer Michelle, model “T”, videographer Tinashe, volunteer male model Isaac, driver Ronnie, guides Clive and myself.

Priscilla in the dawn light

20130422-205021.jpg

Kelli makes up model “T”

20130422-205242.jpg

Dawn saw us at Chilojo Picnic Site, at the base of the cliffs. The resident bull hippo was annoyed at our tumultuous arrival on ‘his’ stretch of beach and yawned angrily , splashing and tossing his head in the cool water of his river as we toted multiple bags and clothes onto the sand and began to set up the first shoot. Clive stood by with weapon, just in case, and we tried to give the river horse as much space as we could!

20130422-205518.jpg

But of course the show had to go on, and luckily the bull calmed down, perhaps even enjoying all the unusual action unfolding on the sand! Cameras clicking, lights flashing, fast changes and touch-ups of lips and hair, video rolling, set-ups of stage props – this was all the intense, hard work that goes into creating a few perfect images for a quality fashion shoot, with the rising sun turning the towering sandstone cliffs every glorious shade of pink and red and highlighting the white scat of a hyena whose tracks led across the sand…

Knowing the speed with which the gentle sun would become a searing mid-morning blaze, Kelli sheltered beneath a wide-brimmed hat and behind dark glasses.

A lone wildebeest came to drink way downstream from us and we heard the distant rumble of a lion. White fronted beeeaters wheeled and twittered above us, with occasional fly-pasts of Brown-headed parrots, while “T” was made up in various out-of- Africa looks, using great props such as belts and bags from Johnstones Saddlery and the simple seed-bead necklaces that the ladies make and sell at the Chipinda Pools reception.
The light fast turned bright enough to chase us from the sand, to hide in the shade of the gigantic Cordyla (wild mango) tree at the picnic site and enjoy our lunch. Thomas Mutombeni and Ian Poynton from Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge passed by, enjoying a game drive, and were most surprised to meet this creative crew in the wilderness that is Gonarezhou!

What a magnificent spectacle the Chilojo Cliffs are……

On our way to the viewpoint at the top of the cliffs we forded the Runde river in our Toyota, forsaking the clumsy minibus for a water-worthy vehicle!
Of course we had to introduce our crew to the delights of wading and bathing in the Runde river and they become so entranced with this ‘cool’ activity that it was unanimously decided to do two shoots in the river! Numerous White- backed vultures bathed further downstream, while we kept to the shallow, hopefully crocodile-free water, and watched from a water- level perspective as the crew created some powerful images of “T” in the river. After videoing the water shoot, Tinashe even managed to sneak up for some reality footage of a flock of wary Egyptian geese .

Dried off and refreshed , we crossed the deep sand of the river bed and drove through large herds of impala and wildebeeste up to the Chilojo Cliffs viewpoint, Tinashe perched all the while on the roof, his preferred position for a unique video perspective. We passed a herd of cow elephants at some speed, giving him no chance to video them, much to his dismay, since they had young calves at heel and looked cheeky! Discretion was definitely the better part of valour in that situation! No footage, sorry Tinashe.
Predictably, all jaws dropped when we arrived at the top of the cliffs and walked out to the viewpoint, on the edge of the precipice with views forever……
Make- up was redone , sets laid out and model ” T” swung into professional mode, reclining in a sumptuous boudoir while the resident Black eagles (Verraux’s eagles) soared overhead.

She was then posed on the edge of the precipice in a glorious wedding dress, to take full advantage of the late afternoon glow. The Black eagle who was now perched on the Sentinel pinnacle nearby, watching us, seemingly impressed by this ethereal figure with the long train of her dress flowing out behind her.
As the sun began to desert us, Kate posed “T” in simple linen pants against the panoramic view. Down her naked back hung the exquisite ‘Safari’ necklace which Aude and Sieglinde of Our Crystal Passion have created for the Chilo Gorge shop.

The African dusk fell on us fast, a mantle gently obliterating the view below and giving us instead a growing canopy of a million stars.
Squeezing all bodies inside the overflowing vehicle, we wound a weary but happy way back to camp and bed, our road amazingly lit by the soft rays of a clear half-moon, as we dodged the many nightjars that camouflaged themselves by squatting like rocks on the track, flying up under our wheels at the very last minute as we approached. We were surprised only once by the sudden appearance of three young bull elephants who ran across the road in front of our headlights, and whose squeals of annoyance jolted our sleeping crew wide awake!

I have told you the story behind this fabulous photoshoots, now for the actual spread of images in glorious print, you will need to wait for the June edition of Domino Magazine!

Gulugi river view from the old tented camp at Chipinda, Gonarezhou

A place of eagle owls, monkeys and leguaans, a tangle of vines and towering riverine trees embracing the opaque water, which in turn hides the fat bream and barbel that the crocodiles cruise for and that the Giant kingfishers, leaping explosively from their hidden perches, lust after.

Missing the spectacular Runde river scenery already! !

But I have the pleasure of returning to Gonarezhou today to help on a fashion photo shoot in front of the cliffs at which my daughter Kelli Barker is the make up artist and location advisor. Should be fun and a statement for conservation of our beautiful wild ares in conjunction with human beauty
