Burnt Wood, Fallen Branches and Old Frames Into Something New
I have always been fascinated with the possibilities of re cycling objects, melting histories and creating something new and unique from a combination of older stories….
I had a house fire-
kept the charred stairs…
and hardwood lintels scarred with their stories….
We lost so much, but saved so much, including a charred door….
This installation resulted:
“Zebra Portal”, acrylic/mixed media and burnt wooden door, 200 x 100 cm

Memories and history all recreated….see more examples of Lin Barrie Art …

I have noticed an artist, Darryl Cox, who melds fallen branches and old picture frames into one-of-a-kind, handmade sculptures……
WOW!

What stories these could tell….

beautiful detailing….a fairy tale…..

Allure of the Seas has claimed Kelli and Anton- they have left Africa to sail The Carribean…
Kelli and Anton have joined Allure of the Seas, gone from African shores for the next nine months.
Allure of the Seas has just been named Best Cruise Ship by Travel Weekly readers for the second year in the row. But this isn’t just a cruise ship. With over 2000 staff, it’s an adventure that sails way ahead of the curve. Explore seven singular neighborhoods, from the winding paths of Central Park to the ultimate rush of the Pool and Sports Zone. Surfing. Ziplining. Ice-skating. 3D movies…..a huge range of entertainment, dining and wellness.
Sailing out of Port Everglades, The Allure is a mixture between a swimming city and an amusement park with its “Central Park” where more than 12000 real plants grow, the “Royal Promenade” which is designed like an English seaside resort and the many restaurants, cafés.
Oh My GOODNESS!…..There are Broadway-style shows, a comedy club, ice revues, acrobatic shows in the Aqua Theatre or you can gamble at the Casino Royale. You can dance the night away at “Blaze” or “Jazz on 4”. At the elegant “Dazzles” you can get dance classes during the day and enjoy theme parties and dancing contests.
Deck 15 offers….swimming pools and Jacuzzis, the H2O-Zone for children, a solarium, playing fields for basketball and volleyball, a climbing wall, miniature golf, two surfing simulators, a jogging track and a zip-line where you can swing on a line over the ship.
Of course Kelli and Anton will hardly get to do all that….!!
….they will be far too busy working extremely hard (as far as I can gather!) on Deck 5 and 6, the Spa and Fitness centre…

This huge fitness area is matched by one of the largest spas on a cruise liner. Yum, it can cater for doubles massages….bliss….

A world apart from normal life, Kelli and Anton will have a testing year of hard work and challenge, mixed up with a whole lot of FUN!
Kelli’s ship last year was the MS Statendam- a pretty little ship, seen here sitting next to Kelli’s glitzy new posting, big sister Allure!!!!
I am entranced…Romero Britto Art is displayed on board the Allure…
here is his painting of the ship…

His iconic style of joyous pop art is very seductive…I am in love!

simple economy of line and color…POW!

An exciting year ahead for kelli and Anton, sailing through western and eastern caribbean ports…
I can track these two children by the following link, very handy!
http://www.sea-scanner.com/schiffsposition.php?schiff=Allure+of+the+Seas
one of the routes they will sail…

here is a fun blog link for this current cruise…

and a gorgeous early morning photo from that blog…the deck of the Allure at Sunrise…

The Stock
great blog, Nic…live your dream….
“Indeed, stock is everything in cooking. Without it, nothing can be done.” – Auguste Escoffier
Stop. Read it again and think about it…
Yup! I’m back. Nope! I haven’t forgotten about this. Now is the right time to write a little something for the first time while I am actually living my dream! To those who dream… Keep dreaming and chase those dreams, chase until you’re tired and then keep on running after it. It doesn’t come easy. I haven’t even scratched the surface of mine yet.
Indeed stock IS everything! Without the stock, the grounding, the basis, your finished dish will be substandard. BUT, in order to get a stock rrrrreally worth something, you need to use top quality ingredients and treat them properly, with respect, care and most of all, LOVE.
See, I happen to be at my ‘stock’ phase. Yes I’ve worked 5 years in kitchens, learnt…

Baobabs and Wire; Elephants and Mud
Early morning on the deck at Chilo
leads into a fabulous day of exploring the newly wet Gonarezhou…on the lookout for our guests favorite animal…Elephants!….today strangely absent today from the landscape! They must have moved far and wide with the little shower of rain we had a night ago….we keep hunting…
Anyway, we see fun little stuff, such as lady tortoises, Spoonbills…
a ponderous and stately monitor lizard…
we find many signs of elephants….(poor baobab!)
and at last, we find a perpetrator!
caught in the act, this bull is intent on extracting as much succulent fibre as he can from this doomed baobab…
and then decides to manage an itch on his posterior, after his meal…
Gonarezhou has numerous huge baobabs, many over two thousand years old…I love these multi purpose, all-embracing monoliths-
BAOBABS rock!
Here is my “Baobab Silhouette”, an acrylic painting on canvas…..

Sadly, in Africa, we have to think of ways to protect them from my other wonderful favorite mammoth, the Elephant! They are going down like nine pins, chewed on by elephants in this present hot and dry period that we are having…a sad loss to the general environment…
Innovative ways to protect them are being tried by the Gonarezhou Trust, Ant Kaschula, Clive Stockil and of course the Chilo Team….
such as Hardwood barricades:

Stone barricades:

My favorite method is one I have tried successfully over the years on hardwood trees at our Bush house, Tsavene, and entails wrapping chicken mesh or diamond mesh snugly round the trunk of the tree to a height of at least three metres. The elephants just don’t mess with it !

Carrying on with our drive, we come across a very, very unusual and special find…Clive shows us a footprint and digging left by a little Pangolin…! Wow…so amazing to find evidence of these highly secretive nocturnal creatures who eat only termites and are highly endangered…

Pangolins, fascinating creatures, that fire my artistic imagination….

We are later delighted to meet up with the naughty baobab-eating bull again, plus a cow herd that has just crossed the Runde River, who politely stroll past us….showing off their tiny tots…

and then give us a wonderful half hour of mud bath antics

in a small depression that has collected just enough water to become a mud jacuzzi…

and a last farewell to the gentle giants as they wander away from the mud pack session, with the Bull bringing up the rear, and very much part of the group…interesting social interaction, he seems totally accepted in this “ladies’ society”!

Just as we need to think innovatively to protect baobabs, so do we need to think outside the box to create space for elephants in this ever shrinking wilderness that we all have to share….we are excited to be sharing our Gonarezhou elephants with a team from Tusk Trust who will visit…a dynamic group who are doing so much for elephants and rhinos, plus other endangered species, Africa-wide…

Lin Barrie Art -inspired by Florida and Texas…abstract landscapes and waterworlds…
My years of traveling have led me from painting in Africa to painting other fascinating landscapes, wildlife, cultures and people.
Some of my favorite places being the watery worlds of South Carolina for White Pelicans,
the Texas coastline for seagulls…..
and Brown Pelicans….
I just LOVE brown pelicans-such characters and so clever at co-existing with humans…
Here is my portrait of “Bob” -a pelican who hung out with us when I was living with dear friends Belinda and Bob in the Forida Keys…
Endlessly inspired by the Florida Seashores, I loved exploring with my darling photographer friend Belinda, just poling about and hanging out with waterbirds galore, permit fish, sharks and all things watery….
Sucking up the vibrant colors and atmosphere of the Miami waterfront and the wonderful mix of culture, street art, galleries, cuban inspired food and music to be found……
I created a fun mural for the Dive Museum in Islamorada… hammerhead shark…
and giant Grouper fish…
And collaborated with Belinda to produce a series of artworks combining her stunning photographs with my paintwork..called “Zimkey Art”, a fusion of Zimbabwean and Keys artist inspiration!
A gorgeous photograph of a squid by Belinda inspired my painted background….

zimkey Squid Reflect
Amazing Jellyfish that congregate in Florida waters…

This was “Elvis” -a confiding Iguana who hung out on the deck at gorgeous boutique residence, Casa Morada, where my daughter Kelli worked …..
Manatees frequented the bay at Casa Morada, and I loved sketching and painting these gentle, endangered creatures…
Gardens and plants are always inspiring to me, especially those in Florida, such as theses colorful Sea Grape leaves…
I’d love to go back to that watery world and that vibrant culture, and perhaps I will…now that Kelli and Anton are married and heading towards the Caribbean on their Cruise Ships adventures again…

that watery world…by Lin Barrie

A wedding to remember……forever
Life is a roller coaster, high wave adventure, and Kelli and Anton started 2015 on a huge wave….!
riding their separate cruise ships round the Hawaii’an Islands and the Caribbean islands!
While on their far-apart cruise ships, Kelli and Anton became officially engaged….so exciting….
Landing back in Africa, they began the loving process of binding their lives together forever…
choosing rings supplied by Kelli’s Uncle Max….
A Pirates and Sailors Party was conceived by Maid of Honour Kimberley…what fun!
Fun stuff…
I made a poster out of fun nautical ideas….
Kimberley was Kelli’s Maid of Honor and her delightful speech for Kelli and Anton embraced all things nautical:
“My sister and new brother-in-law
When 2 people and families come together, you tie the knot and form a stronger bond. So with that said we welcome you Anton and your wonderful family to our families AND secondly we thank you for welcoming Kelli into yours with such love and kindness.
I bet you all probably think you know why we chose the nautical theme – because 2 of our favourite people have been at sea? Well this is not the only reason, and I would like to share the other reason with you in my absence.
Kelli and Anton, the sea is wise, it will always teach you to:
- Anchor yourself to each other – so that you will always keep grounded
- But never weigh each other down
- Don’t ever sink – you are each other’s life jackets
- Life’s roughest storms prove the strength of our anchors
- We need to be brave sailors if we are to go on the biggest journey of our lives
- We sometimes need to be like a pirate – break the rules, get ship faced and have fun together
- We need patience to wait for the perfect tide and to realise timing is NOT our choice BUT is always perfect
- We need to make sure we have life boats – which are trust, and our families and friends
- We need to leave messages in bottles for each other and to always remember to communicate
- Always find your way back to shore and to one another
- And mostly as you set sail enjoy the ride, the sun, the journey and thelove and life you share. Please raise your glasses – cheers to SAILING FOR AN ETERNITY.
- Love, Kimmy xx”
After a simple magistrates Court ceremony early one morning in Harare…..
came a delightful celebration breakfast at The Plot Cafe, with close family….

Then came the Chilo wedding, such an adventure!

rhinestone embellishments on the Vera Wang dress
Kelli and Anton had Jade, Rayne and Kiana as flower girls…

and meanwhile the boys have been getting dressed
excitement builds….
Guiding hands ………
and Anton is ready, waiting for his bride…
Kelli and Anton were married by special friend, Rob Davy on 28th November 2015 early in the morning, at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge.
Before the actual ceremony Jackie and I had a special hug with Anton…Rob checks his notes in the background…)

The stunning view from the wedding deck was enhanced by Lala palm heart fans locally made by Mr Mutema, embellished with paper flowers made by Nyasha of African Papermakers.
what a setting….as the bridal party walks thru the gardens

Confetti….

This is what Michel Fortmann, (Kelli’s dear friend, bridesmaid and professional photographer), had to say about the event…
“Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.” — Bruce Lee
What a love story to tell… Not only was I photogrpaher for the day, but bridesmaid as well, for two of my dearest friends! It was quite difficult trying to wear both hats on the day, but with the help from my amazing finacee – Mark Harris, who was truly thrown in the deepend, we managed to cover all bases:)
It was an early start with the ceremony happening at 8am. At 7.30, I was still clicking away and eventually had to put the camera down and get ready lol! Not easy when there were still so many moments happening that I wanted to capture! Kelli was an absolute picture as she slipped in to her Vera Wang dress and got ready to walk the aisle with her two Dads:)
It was a short, but very meanigful ceremony and a very different experience, being a part of it and not being the voyeur on the outside this time! The vows were exchanged with the most magnificent view of the river below us and the beautiful cliffs as the backdrop and then it was all selaed with the kiss and before we knew it we were walking back up the ailse and headed off for the group shot and magnificent brunch!
After the brunch and a wonderful speech from Kelli’s Dad, we all then de-robed and spent the next couple of hours relaxing by the poolside. Then we all climbed back in our dresses for the formal shots at 4pm and I got some exquisite photos of Kelli, just before we left.
We then headed off, safari style in the game viewing vehicles and headed for the beautful Acacia forests. The sun made her appearance at all the right moments on this day and as we headed into the forests, she appeared from behind the clouds and the most magical light streamed down through the Acacia leaves, backlighting Kelli and Anton with a halo of gold.
We then headed onto the river bed for some really dramatic, editorial style shots and then Mark, got his turn again, with doing some awesome group shots for us! It was a lot of fun and a completley different experience being in front of the camera for a change. The final photos happened down by the old fallen tree, close to the river, with the sun sinking below the forests, as the final backdrop, to an incredible day!
We then headed into the evening reception where some very heartfelt speeches were made and not long after that the dancing got underway!
It was a fantastic day and one I will really treasure! To not only be a part of it but also be there to cature such special moments for Kelli and Anton!”
Kelli’s Vera wang wedding dress was simply, elegantly, drop-dead beautiful…
After the happy ceremony and a relaxed day by the Chilo pool, we went through the riverine forest….

onto the sands of the Save River for a beach sundowner…

My precious daughter now forever linked to my special new son…
Kelli’s Johannesburg family contributed delicious wines and champagne,
and Jeremy Borg contributed Painted Wolf Wines. Food, wine and feasting for all!
I am so happy for this beautiful young couple, on the brink of an exciting life and career together. Plus we are blessed that our combined families share a warmth and love that is real and lasting.
The place Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, a fittingly dramatic and special start to their married life.

Kelli’s and Anton’s last ports-of-call: Guam, Saipan and Philippines….. and The Caribbean..
Kelli’s and Anton’s ships are coming in soon….wooooowhooooooo!
Graham McKean, wonderful artist….painted this ship…
From Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas,
to Norwegian Cruise Line’s Getaway and now Carnival Cruise Line, Anton has achieved such variety, such experience…
made a difference in so many people’s lives….
Kelli has toured so many fascinating places with Holland America, half of the world in fact….making fabulous friends and achieving personal bests. I am so proud of them both!
Kelli’s last postings are Guam, Saipan and the Philippines before her ship, The Statendam, sails into the sunset and dry-docks in Singapore…
Guam is a U.S. island territory in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific.
Hope she enjoys her last tropical beaches… before hitting the african bush…
Chamorro village culture….
Tumon Bay is a hub with bars, shops and an aquarium. Beaches include Ritidian Point, part of a wildlife refuge, and storied Two Lovers Point.
Saipan is one of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. commonwealth in the Western Pacific.
It’s known for its sandy shores, mountainous landscapes, golf courses and World War II battlefields.
The reef-lined beaches of its western and southern coasts are popular for diving and snorkeling…….wonder if she’ll get time off her busy schedule to dive into those waters…
The Philippines is a Southeast Asian country in the Western Pacific, comprising more than 7,000 islands.
Its sprawling capital, Manila, is famous for its waterfront promenade and centuries-old Chinatown. Intramuros, a walled city in colonial times, is the heart of Old Manila. It’s home to the baroque 16th-century San Agustin Church as well as Fort Santiago, a storied citadel and military prison.
Well done Kelli and Anton…What a tribute to both of them… a year of really hard work, play and sacrifice, laughter and some tears, in some of the most beautiful places in this world….
They arrive back on African soil to plan their wedding at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, on the bank of the Save Valley River…
into the wilds of Africa, they will be surrounded by elephants, and an ocean of bush wilderness, after a long year at sea……..
Kelli and Anton, Heading in the right direction……

Kodiak Bears and Kelli eat salmon in Alaska….While Anton steams in the Caribbean…
Wow, from the heat of Hawaii’ and the South Seas, including remote Fanning Island, Kelli is now in the wilds of Alaska…after having found a dream Vera Wang wedding dress in Seattle! No sneak previews of the dress!
While Anton sails the Caribbean, Kelli is 5000 miles away….what a long contract this has been for the two of them…nearly finished now!
Kelli in a cold place…
Anton in a HOT place….
Soon the two sailors will be home from the sea…
Chic hairstyle, Kells!….
and look at the gorgeous treatment bed Kelli sets up- wish I could have one of those facials right now….
While Anton gets really serious about working out…an inspiration to his guests…
Sitka, Alaska, is on Kelli’s route,
and remote Kodiak Island is one of her haunts…
Stunning, huge Kodiak bears are found only on the islands in the Kodiak Archipelago off the south coast of Alaska. Wonder if she will see any or if she will be snoozing in port after long working hours…!!?
These awesome bears are believed to have been isolated there since the last Ice Age over 10,000 years ago. Because of the abundance of food on Kodiak Island, they have smaller home ranges than any other brown bears and have no need to defend territories. Starting in May, the bears feast on a salmon run that lasts into October. All five species of Pacific salmon run wild throughout most of Kodiak Archipelago.
Even if she does not see any, Kelli joins them in feasting on salmon…her last chance before coming home to landlocked Zimbabwe!
